Bodies of engaged Md. couple returned to US; FBI assists in investigation

The bodies of a Prince George’s County, Maryland, couple who died in the Dominican Republic were returned home Tuesday, and their families are planning for a second autopsy.

NBC Washington reported the bodies of Nathaniel Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Day 50, arrived in the United States Tuesday. They were found dead on May 30 at the Bahia Principe Hotel La Romana after they missed their scheduled check out.

The resort released a statement from the country’s attorney general’s preliminary report, saying that the couple had pulmonary edema and respiratory failure, along with other health conditions.

Five days before the Maryland couple was found, Pennsylvania woman Miranda Schaup-Werner was found dead at another Bahia Principe Resort hotel. The hotel said in a statement that, according to forensic results done by Dominican Republic authorities, she died of a heart attack.
